DIGITAL ONLY: TWO STL HOUSING SIZES INCLUDED (10g and 30g wax). No physical item is posted.

Print your own Flat Back Elf mould housing to make a silicone craft mould. Each supplied housing contains 6 decorative cavities. One purchase includes a 10g wax version and a 30g wax version. The 3MF versions are being added to the digital drive separately; the STL files are available now.

Approximate size and materials guide

Measurement 10g wax size 30g wax size
Wax weight per casting 10g 30g
Finished plaster weight per casting 13.3g 40g
Volume per casting 11.1ml 33.3ml
Individual cavity depth 21mm 28mm
Mixed silicone for the complete 6-cavity mould 216g 448g
Estimated printing time 4 hours 7 hours
Estimated filament 135g 270g

All measurements and material amounts are approximate and not guaranteed. Overall printed housing dimensions should be confirmed from the respective STL in the slicer, not from old graphics. Estimates vary with materials, printing, silicone density and fill level. The plaster figure represents approximate finished casting weight, not dry plaster powder. Follow your plaster manufacturer's mixing ratios.

Housing design and how to use it

The revised files have approximately 4mm printed walls and floor, 5mm silicone spacing between pieces and around the edge, and 6mm silicone over the tops. Download and slice the selected file, check the build-plate fit, print the housing, then prepare, pour and cure a suitable craft silicone according to its manufacturer's instructions. A 3D printer, filament and silicone are needed. No food-contact safety is implied.

Need a different size?

Please contact us with the desired casting weight or dimensions and we can consider making and listing the correctly redesigned size. Do not resize these housing files in your slicer, especially smaller. Reducing scale thins the housing walls and floor and reduces silicone clearances, potentially weakening the housing and finished mould. Scaling up changes casting weights and materials too.

Commercial licence

Commercial licence included for eligible finished physical products, subject to the supplied licence terms. No resale, sharing, gifting or redistribution of the digital design files or modifications is permitted. See the existing licence images for details.

Digital downloads available worldwide. Physical printed housings and finished silicone moulds are available separately for UK delivery.

WHAT ARE YOU BUYING?

DIGITAL ONLY – STL and/or 3MF: the digital mould housing files specified in the individual product listing to 3D print yourself. No printed housing or silicone is supplied. Digital delivery is worldwide.

PHYSICAL 3D-PRINTED HOUSING: a printed mould-making framework with the master shape; you add and cure your own silicone. This is not a finished silicone mould.

PHYSICAL SILICONE MOULD: a finished flexible mould made by us for casting. Physical items are available for UK delivery only.

Check each individual listing for exact contents, size, licence terms and compatible uses.

MOULD SIZES: 10G + 30G WAX

Our updated digital mould housing designs are offered in two ready-designed sizes: approximately 10g and 30g of wax per finished casting. Where the product says both sizes are included, you receive both complete housing files with one purchase. Check the individual listing and actual download to confirm which STL and/or 3MF files are currently provided; do not assume a format is included unless listed.

As a rough comparison, 10g wax ≈ 13g finished plaster and 30g wax ≈ 40g finished plaster for the same cavity volume. Plaster figures are estimates of a finished casting, not dry plaster powder to weigh out. Follow the mixing and curing instructions on your own plaster packaging.

Every mould design has different overall housing dimensions, print times and silicone requirements. Consult the product's measurement table and check the actual STL/3MF dimensions in your slicer. All figures, weights and quantities are approximate, not guaranteed; materials and pouring methods affect the results.

PLEASE DO NOT RESIZE MOULD HOUSING FILES

Need a different size? Contact us with your preferred dimensions or estimated finished casting weight. We can look at making a properly redesigned version and listing it for you to purchase.

Our mould housings are not intended to be uniformly resized in your slicer — especially smaller. Shrinking the complete design also reduces the printed wall and floor thickness, along with the silicone clearance between, around and above the raised shapes. This could leave the housing weaker or the finished silicone mould too thin and prone to tearing. Scaling up changes cavity weights, printing fit and silicone quantities.

We redesign the cavity proportions and housing clearances as needed rather than simply scaling the complete print. Use the supplied files at their intended size unless a custom version has been made for you.

HOW MUCH SILICONE WILL I NEED?

Each product's sizing table gives an approximate amount of mixed silicone in grams for the whole mould — not for one individual casting. This is a planning estimate, so allow a little extra for residue in your mixing cup and any differences in your pour.

Silicone quantity depends on the precise housing geometry, intended fill height and the density of your chosen silicone. ml and grams are not interchangeable unless you use the manufacturer's actual mixed density. Follow the specific silicone's Part A and Part B mixing ratios and curing instructions. Our current digital housings are designed around approximately 4mm printed walls and floor, 5mm silicone between/around shapes, and 6mm silicone above them; check your product's specifications.

WHAT IS A MOULD HOUSING?

A mould housing holds a master shape inside a surrounding wall while liquid silicone cures. Once cured, remove the housing and master to reveal the flexible silicone mould. A pull-release tab helps gently lift or loosen the silicone during demoulding, avoiding damage to delicate features; it is not a carrying handle.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SILICONE MOULD

1. Prepare: Print your digital STL/3MF housing or use your physical housing. Check the master is seated and all joins are secure and leak-resistant; clean away dust and loose strands.

2. Protect: Work on a level, protected surface with appropriate gloves and ventilation. Keep food utensils separate from craft supplies. Use the PPE recommended by your silicone supplier.

3. Release: If required, apply a very thin coating of compatible mould-release spray to the master/housing and test first. Some silicone systems need no release. Coconut oil is sometimes used for non-food craft work, but it is not a guaranteed substitute: it can interfere with curing or surface detail, so only use it after a compatibility test.

4. Measure and mix: Follow the manufacturer's precise Part A/Part B ratio by weight or volume as specified, mixing thoroughly along the cup sides and bottom. Do not assume every silicone is 1:1.

5. Make it colourful: Add a tiny amount of silicone-compatible mica or pigment if desired. Too much, or the wrong type, can interfere with curing; test a sample first.

6. Pour: Pour slowly into one corner in a fine stream to reduce trapped air. Gently tap or use your manufacturer's recommended bubble-removal technique.

7. Cure and release: Wait for the specified temperature, curing time and any post-cure instructions before removing. Loosen the housing and use the pull-release tab carefully. Inspect for uncured areas before casting and test your chosen casting medium.

WHAT IS SHORE HARDNESS?

Shore A describes silicone firmness: lower numbers are softer and more flexible, higher numbers firmer. Suitable hardness also depends on design size, wall thickness and undercuts.

Shore A 0–10: extra-soft for intricate undercuts and delicate forms, usually needing support for larger pieces. Shore A 10–20: flexible general craft moulds, often chosen for plaster, wax melts and decorative resin where approved by the silicone maker. Shore A 20–30: firmer moulds for larger or simpler shapes, including some plaster and concrete casting. Shore A 30+: stiffer moulds or technical applications with less-demanding demoulding.

We use BBDINO platinum-cure Shore A 15 for many craft moulds, valued for detail reproduction and flexibility. Verify chemical, heat and casting compatibility for your exact silicone.

FOOD SAFETY, RELEASE SPRAYS & CARE

Food safe? Platinum-cure silicone is not automatically food-safe. Only use a silicone specifically documented as suitable for your intended food contact, prepared and cured exactly as the manufacturer requires. Colourants, release agents, 3D-printed surfaces and previous craft use can also affect suitability. Our craft mould products should be considered non-food use unless explicitly stated otherwise on the listing.

Never use a mould with food after making resin, plaster, wax or other non-food items in it. Check heat limits and intended applications. Use release spray approved for your particular silicone/master materials. Household coconut oil may leave residue or inhibit cure; do not rely on it for food moulds.

A little silicone-compatible mica can give your moulds beautiful colour, but not all mica pigments are silicone-compatible or food-contact approved.

MY MOULD RELEASE SPRAY

For some mould projects a suitable release spray helps separate materials cleanly. Follow product directions and test your silicone system before coating the master.
